1986 - 2023

With great sadness, the family of Vincent William McLaughlin regrets to announce the sudden passing of their dear brother, son, nephew, and cousin, on September 5, 2023, in Toronto, Ontario at the age of 37.

Left to cherish his memory are his father, John Duthie, and stepmother, Vivian Duthie; stepfather, Bernie Wright; brothers Josh and Alistair Wright; sisters Jackie Thomas and Cynthia Fidler; step-sister Cecily Sutherland; brothers Jimmy and Gibby Duthie; aunts and uncles: Sharon (Robert) Kunzelman, Robert McLaughlin, Carol McLaughlin (Dan Diamond), Kathryn McLaughlin (Larry Harder), Hugh McLaughlin (Valdine), Janice McLaughlin (John Caister); cousins Chris (Tanis) Caister, Aly and Riley Caister, Melanie Caister (Cory Roskos), Kelly and Cayden Kunzelman, Sandra Pottinger, Nicole Pottinger (Calvin Wieler), Michelle Pottinger (Joe Smith), Shannon (Graham) Nicholson, Sherrilyn (James) Lytwyn, Sara McLaughlin (Aaron Funk), and Jennifer (Jason) Poulsen; step-sisters Cristie (Darren) Gourley and Dee (Gary) Romijn; step-brother Riley (Elle) Wright; and numerous friends and extended family. Vince was predeceased by his mother, Alison McLaughlin-Wright in 2010 and grandmother, Susan McLaughlin in 2017.

Vince, known affectionately as Vinnie, VDub, or Vincenzo, was born March 29, 1986 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba to Alison McLaughlin and John Duthie. Vince grew up at the McLaughlin family’s Pine Crescent home, and consequently was very attached to his Grandma (Susan) and Uncle Rob.

Vince attended Yellowquill School and Arthur Meighen High School. He loved and excelled in sports and fitness, and took pride in his athletic accomplishments through his school years. A provincial champion in track and field and a star soccer player and gymnast, he excelled both individually and as part of a team in tournaments across Manitoba. Vince was popular both in and out of the classroom, and enjoyed hanging out with his cousins and large circle of friends.

Spending time outdoors - at the farm in Plumas - and many summers at the family cottage on Lake Manitoba, Vince developed an appreciation for nature and wildlife that lasted his lifetime. He had a passion for hiking and camping and enjoyed extreme whitewater rafting and climbing up hills and mountains.

Unfortunately, during Vince’s teen years excessive use of alcohol and drugs were his downfall, creating a situation he couldn’t escape until his Aunt Carol and Uncle Dan offered him an opportunity to move to Toronto and make a fresh start.

In 2003, Vince moved from Manitoba to Toronto – a place he loved visiting as a child, and where he’d begin a new chapter of his life and eventually call home.

Vince spent a summer in Alberta working on oil rigs near Drayton Valley, before returning to Toronto. He worked at the Hockey Hall of Fame and Rogers Centre, two exciting workplaces that aligned with his love of the NHL and Toronto Blue Jays. Vince completed his high school diploma in Toronto and later graduated from George Brown College with his Electrician’s Certificate. Vince’s career in the trades took him to myriad job sites in Ontario and briefly to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where he was part of a crew of electricians that re-wired a potash mine.

Vince was known for his adventurous spirit. His interests included a desire to explore the world, taking him to exotic destinations including Mexico, Cuba, Peru, Panama, Costa Rica, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.

Vince was a warm, loving and generous soul, sentimental and proud of his much-loved family. He adored animals, was open-minded and loved learning, and though he could be headstrong, he could be equally compassionate and kind-hearted.

He was, in turn, smart, charismatic, articulate and mischievous though much of his charm and personality was lost as a consequence of the addictions and mental illness that overtook him in his final years.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Vince’s memory to CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) (https://www.camh.ca/) or Portage Animal Welfare Society (http://www.portageanimalwelfaresociety.com/) .

Or, feel free to reach out to someone who might need to talk, listen to them, and tell them they are loved – even when answers can’t be found.

Messages and condolences may be left at www.cremationalternatives.com. Please visit Vince's obituary notice on Facebook.

Carol Ann Rivest (nee McNeil) peacefully entered the presence of Jesus, her Lord, and Saviour, on June 1, 2023, at 78 years of age.  She was married for 56 years to the love of her life Claude Rivest who predeceased her on June 27, 2022.

Carol is the cherished mother of her three children:  Renee & Wayne Mills, Jeff & Joanne Rivest, and Deborah & John Hormillosa.

She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of 10 grandchildren in whose lives she invested spiritually and especially in the giving of her time:  Ryan & Faith Mills, Michelle Bural, Darryn Mills & fiancée Jennifer Howson, Kyle & Katie Rivest, Lauren & Colt Colenutt, Conner Rivest, Katherine Rivest, Owen Hormillosa, Elle Hormillosa, and River Hormillosa.

She also took great delight in her seven great grandchildren:  Selah Mills, Levi Mills, Dillon Bural, Emma Bural, Maisie Rivest, Jackson Rivest, and Harper Colenutt.

Carol will be missed by her loving siblings, who really were her best friends:  Marilyn & Adam Maryanovich, Jerry & Donna McNeil, and Sandra & George Sims.  She is predeceased by her parents, Dan and Emma (LeClair), and her sister-in-law Mary Lynn McNeil.

She was a true nurturer and devoted her life to pouring into the lives of her children, encouraging, continually praying for, and leading them spiritually by her quiet example.  Her giving heart was always putting others before herself.  Alongside her husband Claude, she devoted 25 years of her life living out her faith and caring for those in need with her servant’s heart.

Our mother is physically gone, free from ailments and pains; however, her memories, influences, lessons taught and lived, remain tangible.  Selfishly, we wanted to keep her with us, but as Mom would say, she’d “prepared for her graduation day” and we could not hold on to her any longer. She has “fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith…”.

Carol will be remembered in a private family celebration of life.

After a short stay in hospital, Richard Warwick Williams of Oro-Medonte, Ontario (previously Oakville) passed away on April 15, 2023 at age 75.

Rick was a very successful engineer and businessman, but family was of paramount importance. His parents, the late Dr. Al and Betty Williams, knew him as a rambunctious and fearless youngster. Rick and his first wife, Raine Greenwood (Henry Shewfelt), raised their son the late Dean Williams (Christina Ingraldi) and their daughter Michon Williams (Michael Weissglas). At their home on Lake Simcoe, Rick and his late wife Linda Crane Williams relished grandparenting his precious grandchildren Aaron, Sam and Leah (Michon Williams and Michael Weissglas) and Eva (Dean Williams and Christina Ingraldi).

His brother David Williams (Carol Brayman) and sister Marilyn Lurz (Peter Dowsett) knew him as a loyal, steadfast and caring friend, as did his sister-in-law Barbara Minett (Bob Ferguson). Rick’s enthusiastic duties as uncle extended to Frank and John (Dominique Gendron) Williams and Michael and Evelyn (Brian Wendler) Lurz, and his step-nephews and -nieces.

Wherever he was - in his engineering career or sailing from the Oakville Yacht Squadron - Rick accumulated a wide set of great friends. He embraced many hobbies and interests including his two sports cars, traveling, collecting and operating ham radios, listening to music, reading, and discussing local and world events. His sailing adventures took him throughout much of Lake Ontario, including the Thousand Islands, and reached as far as the Caribbean and the North and South Atlantic.

Sailors don’t get lost; they just find a safer harbour. Life loved Rick and he loved life, embracing it until the end. His great sense of humour and his laughter will be missed and will echo over the lake forever.

We thank Rick’s many medical specialists including the Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Munk Wing, Toronto General Hospital for their tremendous efforts.

Donations to the Canadian Lung Association or Toronto General Hospital are welcome. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Please visit Rick's obituary notice on Facebook.

Jacqueline Marion Dougall (nee Stanley), 82, of Oakville, Ontario passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 28th, 2023 at Billings Court Manor in Burlington, Ontario.

Jackie, as she was known to her friends and family, was born on December 10th, 1940, to Dorothy and Alfred Stanley and was one of ten children. She married her true love, Stuart Dougall, on October 6, 1961 and they welcomed three children.  They lived in San Fernando, Trinidad until moving to Kingston, Jamaica where Stuart worked for Barclays Bank.  In 1975, the family moved to Canada to join members of their extended family, gaining their citizenship in 1981.

Jackie worked at the Bank of Montreal in the Mississauga and Oakville area, retiring in 1997. She was incredibly proud of her children as they graduated from university, bought homes and raised families of their own. She loved nothing more than being "Granny Dougall" to her seven grandchildren, willingly helping with babysitting, carpooling and cheering along the sidelines at many sporting events.  She was a wonderful partner to Stuart, taking incredible care of him for many years as he faced early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.  Always sporting a beautiful smile, she will be greatly missed for her exuberant zest for life, kindness, generosity, love of Caribbean dance and her delicious West Indian cooking - nobody made a better macaroni pie or stewed chicken with rice and peas.

Jackie is now reunited with her loving husband Stuart, who passed away on November 5, 2022. She is survived by her son Stephen Dougall and his wife Terri and their children Heather (Andrew), Michael (Michelle) and Laura; her daughter Ann Marie Brown and her children Amanda (Dakari) and Victoria and her son Robert Dougall, his wife Brenda and their children Caitlin and Jessica.  Jackie also leaves behind her beloved little dog, Riley.  She will also be missed by her brothers, sisters and their extended families, who were such a big part of her and Stuart's life.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at the Village of Tansley Woods, who cared for Jackie and Stuart for many years, the kind and caring staff at Billings Court Manor, where they resided for the last few months, and Dr. Ragonetti who oversaw their care at both facilities.

Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Society or Acclaim Health.

Messages and condolences may be left at www.cremationalternatives.com. Please visit Jacqueline's obituary notice on Facebook.

Michael Kenneth May

April 13, 1943 - January 26, 2023

We like to think Michael was hitching a ride on the 2023 BU asteroid. He died in hospital around 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2023 - shortly before the asteroid was passing by the Earth.

Born April 13, 1943, in Bromley, Kent, England, Michael was a wanderer at heart. He lived in or travelled to many corners of the globe before finally settling in Toronto, which made sense because Toronto is a city where people from every country in the world call home!

For many years Michael’s vegetarian restaurant Hey Good Cooking (est. 1989) was a fixture at 238 Dupont Street in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood. He transformed what was once a laundromat and then a fried chicken take-out into a vibrant restaurant for vegetarian food. To mark the transformation he had the interior and exterior of the building painted brilliant shades of blue, green, red, and yellow. Inside, the walls provided space for local artists to display and sell their artwork. But what most customers will likely remember was the brightly coloured mural depicting the interior of the cafe and the diversity of its clientele.

Before opening Hey Good Cooking, Michael made his mark in the early 1980’s on Toronto’s burgeoning vegetarian food scene as a chef at the Renaissance Cafe on Bloor Street West. In 1987, he started a wholesale vegetarian roti and roll business out of a basement kitchen in Kensington Market and distributed to 60 vegetarian outlets throughout the GTA. Known for his famous Mushroom Nut Loaf and Southern Spiced Tofu, his recipes were featured a number of times in the Toronto Star and other local newspapers. His regulars came back again and again for the daily specials, casual dining environment, and to enjoy music from around the world - especially when Mike was working!

In 2007, Toronto lost a vegetarian culinary legacy when Hey Good Cooking had to close its doors due to the doubling of rents - a phenomenon all too common and devastating to the small business mosaic of our city. In remembering Michael today we want to honour the role he played in helping lay the foundation of Toronto’s vegetarian food culture. He was doing it before it was cool!

When Michael wasn’t cooking, he loved playing squash, running, watching tennis and hockey, listening to jazz, playing the piano, and wandering in Toronto’s ravines. He was a dedicated father and grandfather who took the kids to the park, for long bike rides, and regaled them with stories of his world travels. Unfortunately, Michael’s later years were spent battling various health issues which meant he was no longer able to do all the things he loved. We are comforted knowing that he is now at peace – happily stirring a good cup of tea.

We would like to acknowledge the compassionate care Michael and our family received in recent years from Trillium Hospital (Mississauga) who supported our family’s decision to provide care for him in our home. And whenever we needed extra help, Toronto Fire, Toronto Paramedics, and ER staff were there to offer their support. We are forever grateful.

Michael died surrounded by family who loved him, and that gives us all comfort in our great loss. Thank you as well to the ICU staff who cared for Michael with such compassion while we processed this tragedy.

Michael is survived by his daughters Samantha and Sarah, grandson Taejon, and extended family in England, Australia, and Canada.

A celebration of life for family and close friends will be planned for this summer. If you wish, memorial donations can be directed to the Daily Bread Food Bank, or consider sharing a vegetarian meal with someone you love.
