I was Curtis and Julies scuba instructor. I taught them when they lived in North Saanich, BC just before they moved to the Bahamas.

I am sorry to hear the sad news of them both leaving this blue marble. I had been thinking about them for a couple of years, but never contacted them.

My condolences to their families.

I first me Curtis in 1984 I was 19 at the time. He was good friends with my 2nd parents I called them Don and Patty Hargrave. He painted Mr. Hargrave and was a guest as I for many of lavish dinner parties they hosted.

I have very fond memories of Curtis during those times. In fact, at the time I was fairly attractive and before life's adversities knocked at my door, had a good sense of humor and threw caution to the wind so to speak. I got a call one day I'll never forget it was Curtis. I knew he was a famous painter but he was so humble and in my eyes a true Gentleman I was surprised to hear from him. He asked me if I would be his model for a project he was commissioned to do for the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was to do 5 canvas' that ended up being each the size of my bedroom wall of the 5 Freudian images of a woman. I laughed and said you don't want me. I have a girlfriend that would be much more appropriate for you. At the time I was impressionable and even though I could make people laugh, I was overly sensitive, self conscious and hurting inside.

Curtis said no....no one else but you if you would grant me the honor. Oh my God....ME grant him the honor....what trip is this guy on I thought. He famous, me a nobody....wow.

So I agreed. I sat for him, 2 years before the Queen lol. He took, nothing seedy but genuine and tasteful photographs of me in his attire of choice. After a few weeks he asked me, because I didn't believe he was actually going to paint me thought it was a ruse or a bad joke, he asked me to come down to his studio in Markham, On at the time and unveiled his first rendering of me. I stood shocked and mesmerized. It was me....it was a huge canvas the 2nd already started, of me. I was alive and beautiful. Not like me looking into a mirror because I did not see beauty but through his eyes transferred to his hand and with each brush stroke he painted me and I was almost like an angel. Like his of da Vincis Mona Lisa. Lol I was nor am a noble woman like she but to me I was a someone to him enough to consider me for this project.

Just the other day I came across learning of his life. It only added to his mystique for me albeit he left this world in not so much of a good memory for some. I on the other hand will always cherish his memory. He did have a sadness about him at the time, now I know why and how it manifested itself to me. He treated me with kindness and as a lady.

Who knows where these renderings are now or if they were ever completed. It would be interesting to find out.

May you rest in peace Curtis

PS funny story.....Curtis talked to me at the time over a glass of wine his ambition to fake his death one day....maybe after painting the Queen. They had been in contact with him about doing so but was putting it off until he could in his own words...I won't say....he knew his paintings would fetch much more than when he was alive. Lol

With fond memories,
Stephanie Merklinger
