Walter Alexander (Alex) Rideout

After a long illness, Walter Alexander (Alex) Rideout, 76, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 25th, 2024 in Cambridge, Ontario surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia on April 6, 1947, Alex was the oldest son of the late Walter and Irene Rideout of Mill Creek, Cape Breton.

Alex’s career started on the lake boats, before finding his home at Michelin Tire in Pictou County, N.S.  As his career at Michelin progressed, his expertise was needed at tire plants all over the world.  He worked in France, Hungary, Mexico, Columbia, Thailand and several US States.  No matter how far he travelled his heart as was always in Cape Breton.  He retired in 2011 after 40 years with the company.

Providing for his family was always the most important thing to Alex. He worked hard and was well respected by colleagues across the globe, which made it all the more funny when he cracked a joke or a witty one-liner.  He was an avid Blue Jays fan and loved to fish.  He loved to tell stories, especially about his days on the lake boats or about his beloved grandchildren, who called him Poppy.

Alex is survived by devoted wife of 52 years Wanda (Day), children Trina (Todd) Wills, Jason (Natasha) Rideout, and grandchildren Adam, Allison, and Alexander, all of Ontario. He is also survived by brothers Doug, Jimmy, Ronnie and Blake, and sisters Linda and Mary Anne.

He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Irene, brother Michael Terrence (in infancy), sister-in-law Arlene (Conway) Rideout, and nephew Corey Rideout.

If Alex were asked to leave us all with some words of wisdom, anyone who knew him well would agree he’d tell us to always remember “everything is just tickety-boo”.

In honor of his wishes, a celebration of life will be held in Bras d’Or at a later date.  Interment will be at St Joseph’s Cemetery.  Donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

Messages and condolences may be left at www.cremationalternatives.com. Please visit Alex’s obituary notice on Facebook.
